Service Description

Mondays @ 6:30-9pm, March 31st - May 5th Geometric Slab Construction is a 6-week course exploring the geometric construction of ceramics. Students will learn to design and construct forms using prisms and anti-prisms, refine their pieces through pattern design and surface carving, and experiment with advanced techniques such as folding clay and bone dry construction. The course concludes with a glazing session, including a spray booth demonstration. Prior hand-building experience is recommended. Week 1: Introduction to Prisms and Anti-Prisms • Template creation for geometric forms • Discussion on polyhedra and dihedral angles • Students begin construction of their first piece using slabs Week 2: Bone-Dry Construction and Folding Clay • Small test pieces for experimenting with bone-dry construction • Introduction to folding clay into geometric patterns • Students decide if they want to incorporate these techniques into their ongoing pieces Week 3: Stacking and Refining Forms • Focus on stacking prisms and anti-prisms • Refining surfaces and edges • Students primarily work with leather-hard clay; can add fresh clay while managing moisture levels Week 4: Surface Carving and Pattern Design • Surface carving practice on test slabs • Introduction to basic geometric pattern design • Students apply carving and design techniques to their pieces when ready Week 5: Work Week • Time for students to refine, finish, and assemble their pieces • Demonstration of the spray booth for glaze application Week 6: Glazing Party • Students apply glaze to their pieces and potluck Level: Intermediate Materials Included: 25lbs clay, tools, slips, firing, 6 weeks of instruction. Note: Maximum scale is at 14 inches tall and wide for project pieces.
