Intro to Hand Tools: Salt Box (S6)

6-week Introductory Woodworking Course

495 US dollars
9th Street

Service Description

The salt box has a long history in Germanic cultures as a wedding gift and/or symbol of hospitality. In this class we’ll add a bit of California to the tradition, building our own delicate salt box from redwood. The boxes will be joined with a single oversized dovetail in each corner. This piece employs some clever hardware for its hinged lid and the bottom will either be glued in place or will be set in dadoes. This introductory-level course will primarily focus on building hand-tool skills, though we’ll use some power tools for milling. Depending on student progress and available time, students may be able to finish the salt box and start on the process of designing and building a second box during the six-week term. SKILLS TAUGHT Basic hand tools usage Simple box joinery Simple lumber preparation ATTENDANCE / MAKE-UP POLICY During this class, students will have access to the shop during class time only. In the event of an absence, students can make up their work during one of our office hours. The office hours schedule can be found on our woodshop calendar here: https://www.clayroomsf.com/woodshopcalendar. Students should communicate with their instructor about what work they need to complete to catch up before coming to office hours.
